SKEE TODD
“Hello, World!” shouts Memphis born rapper Skee Todd as he steps onto the music scene. His birth name is Reginald Todd. He was born and raised in Memphis, TN; South Memphis to be exact. He started making music as a youngster at age 14. He has been doing music seriously for 6 or 7 years. He started out by writing lyrics as an outlet for his creativity. Family members encouraged him, comparing him to the likes of major artists like Tupac, Juvenile and Master P as he began to spit the rhymes he wrote. His music started out to be about his struggle and how there were so many things that he wanted to do. Now he is a living witness that a tree can grow from the concrete.
What do the words “southern”, “style”, “swag” and “stuntin’” have in common? They are all descriptors of what Skee Todd dishes out in his music. He has migrated to Houston, TX, carrying his Memphis heritage of music with him. The most recent rappers he has had the pleasure of collaborating with are Gucci Mane, Rocko, Young Dolph, Zed Zilla, OG Boo Dirty, Lil Flip, Gangsta Boo and La Chat to name a few. Opening for an artist like Plies, French Montana, and Lil Webbie inspired him to go beyond his dreams and imagination. If he had ever been seen performing anywhere, it may have been at the Martini Room, Level II, or VIP Lounge in Memphis, some hot clubs in Houston, TX or the hot spots in Mississippi. His track record consists of “Hello, World” featuring Shawty B, “Flatline” featuring Young Dolph, “Diggin’ Me” featuring Gucci Mane and “Guap Walk.” The street anthem “First 48” featuring O.G. Boo Dirty is in rotation on HOT 107.1 and K97, local radio stations in Memphis, TN. Skee Todd's first two singles "Diggin Me" & "First 48" have gotten regional radio play in Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama.
He is not necessarily different from other artists. He simply does some things that are not typical of other Memphis rappers. One thing in particular is reaching back to the Memphis community and pulling up other artists who have dreams of making it by having his own record label. Those he helps tend to be those young men who don’t have a father figure in their lives and who gravitate toward him. So far he has a roster of 4 artists, signed to his record label, Hello World Ent, which includes himself, 2 rappers and 1 R&B singer. His label can offer something different. He can produce a whole album without alluding to shooting and robbing, creating an offering of diversity as he makes music catering to kids, women, or lovers of R&B.
When asked what motivates him to do what he does, he will quickly reply: “To show everyone around that hard work pays off.” His biggest philanthropic contribution besides starting the record label has been putting his mother in a nice home and providing for his kids. If all else were to fail, he still has an escape route as a barber. Since all of his short term goals have been met, there is no reason to believe that there will be a need for that backup plan. When asked what he wants to say to naysayers, the only thing he wants to say to everyone is “Hello, World…”
